How Does a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Work?

An energy storage system (ESS) is a complex equipment that can control and store the electricity flows in the power system. The power source is an indispensable part of ESS. The most common power source used in ESS is solar energy.

Another critical component is an inverter. The inverter can convert DC to AC and feeds to the grid. Thus, the power can be used in household appliances.

The core of the ESS is the battery. This component stores the incoming energy or electricity from the power system and discharge later when needed. A battery will have a maximum capacity and needs various times to charge fully.

The energy monitoring system acts as a sensor in the energy storage system, enabling users to visualize all the power flow through the ESS. More importantly, it knows how much energy is consumed from the grid, the battery information, and the consumption pattern. This system allows users to monitor the real-time performance of ESS through a mobile app. Any system failure will be detected instantaneously and reported to users.

What Should You Consider When Selecting a Battery Energy Storage System?

  • Product operation type

  • Average usage/day

  • System size profile

  • Life span

  • Charge efficiency / minimum charge

Here a general picture to understand which is the optimal device for you based on average usage and size profile.

1. Young Adults:

Utilization focused early in the morning and evenings. More usage during the day on weekends.

Average usage 20kWh per day

Optimal Solar System Size: 5kWh

2. Retirees:

Usually at home during the day. Heating and cooling system through day and night.

Average usage 30kWh per day

Optimal Solar System Size: 6.6kWh

3.Extensive Energy User:

Warehouse, Swimming pool, commercial buildings. Electronic devices operate through summer and winter.

Average usage 50kWh per day

Optimal Solar System Size: 13kWh

Is a Battery Energy Storage System Worth the Investment?

Generally speaking, residential energy storage solutions are worth the investment. Your property can exponentially grow in value. Besides, your investment will return within few years from the installation. Your electric bills will be cut, making both you and the planet happier.

Why Is Battery Energy Storage Important for the Future Energy System?

Energy storage plays a critical role in our lives and can significantly help us create a safer and more flexible grid system. Many innovative energy systems allow you to remotely control and monitor your household energy through a mobile app. The system will charge the batteries during off-peak periods and discharge them to the load at peak hours to reduce electricity consumption.

What Is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an advanced energy storage solution that stores electricity generated from solar panels or the grid and supplies power when needed. It usually consists of battery modules, BMS, inverter and Energy Management System (EMS).
